While root canals are highly successful, some teeth may not heal properly or may develop new issues over time. In these cases, endodontic retreatment may be necessary. At East Atlanta Endodontics, we specialize in identifying problems with previously treated teeth and performing advanced retreatment procedures to preserve them.

Why Would a Tooth Need Retreatment?

There are several reasons a root canal-treated tooth may require a second look:

  • Hidden or curved canals were missed in the first procedure

  • New decay has exposed the root canal filling to bacteria

  • A crown or filling was delayed, allowing contamination

  • A crack or fracture has developed in the tooth

  • The tooth has developed a new infection months or even years later

What’s Different About Retreatment?

Retreatment involves reopening the tooth, removing the previous root canal filling material, and cleaning the canals more thoroughly, often using updated imaging and tools. Once cleaned and disinfected, the canals are refilled and sealed, and a new restoration is placed to protect the tooth.

Retreatment can save teeth that might otherwise be lost. If you’re experiencing pain or swelling in a previously treated tooth, don’t ignore it, schedule an evaluation to explore your options.
